Genocide, apartheid, war crimes, starvation. The people stand with Palestine, yet the US political establishments continue to enable Israel’s carnage day after day. Everything seems upside down.

So what can the theater do?

We can set the world right side up. By creating Apartheid Free Zones, we can ensure we're not supporting Israel's crimes in any way, fostering spaces free from all forms of oppression. We can infuse the American theater with every ounce of our creativity and every bit of our sense of justice. TW4C’s brand new toolkit launches this exciting new initiative of solidarity for the US theater and performance industries. 

Borrowed from the same strategy that helped bring down apartheid-era South Africa, “AFZ’s” are intersectional spaces that bring together multiple struggles for justice and equality under the focus of the movement for Palestine. They are acts of placemaking that can turn seemingly apolitical or neutral performance spaces into motivating community hubs. 

Becoming an AFZ is as simple as three steps:

1. Declare your commitment: make a plan and set a deadline to transition

2. Become an AFZ via PACBI and BDS commitment: materially divest from Israel until it ceases to violate international law

3. Make it your own: infuse all the wonderful particularities of your unique organization, local community, and vibrant intersectional values
